The story is of a boy who is sent to the market to buy beans but can’t seem to get it right. The boy ends up losing the dish and his money. The story would best be read by ages nine and up.
I liked the plot of the story. The characters were not as defined as I would have liked. A good ending, though it could have been better. It relates to all of us in a way that we all get lost in our childhood.
Naguib Mahfouz is from Egypt, the story is also placed in Egypt. I think Mahfouz intended for the story to portray the image of being lost in a sea of people. Overall the story was fine and I think you should give it a try.
